Sep 01, 02:09 PM
Friday September 1st 1939
After staging incidents to make it appear that they were being attacked, German forces cross the border into Poland at 0445 hours, attacking from the north, south and west.

Polish single-seat fighters, like this PZL11c drawn by Ian Kennedy, will face the Luftwaffe.
The town of Wielun is attacked and almost destroyed by the Luftwaffe and heavy civilian casualties are caused.
The governments of Britain and France demand the withdrawal of German troops.

A comic about these very early days of the war would be pretty interesting, I think. The heroic resistance of the hopelessly outclassed Polish Air Force… nobody quite sure if it would turn into another trench-based stalemate, etc…
You’re right , Michael. It’s something that’s been used in past Commandos. And we have two stories about Polish servicemen due to be finished for next year. Full details, as always, here on the website.
Looking back though the files, I came across this cover from June 1990. No 2383 drawn by Ian Kennedy.
