Deadly Despatches
Gallant reporters are caught up in Boer War. Art/Cover: Keith Page On sale December 2009

At the end of the 19th Century our intrepid reporter heroes – Fred “Ferret” McGlone, Harry Hornby and Digby Bolton – are in the front line once again. This time they are caught up in the blood-soaked action of the Boxer Rebellion in Peking. As British troops fight alongside those of several other nations to quell the brutal uprising, fellow newshounds Charles Black and Ned Bly uncover a plot to misinform the Western world about what’s really happening in China. Would they and their despatches ever reach home?
Story: Norman Adams. Art/Cover: Keith Page.

What other issues of Commando have our intrepid reporters appeared in?

And any chance of a collection of them?

Thanks.

The Editor    Dec 11, 02:01 PM    #

The dodgy journalists have appeared in:

No 3722 “Read All About It!”
No 3725 One More War
No 3944 At The Sharp End!
No 4004 Bad News Travels Fast!
No 4017 Quick On The Draw
No 4050 “Hold The Front Page!”
No 4235 Desert Despatches (Oct ’09)
No 4243 Dangerous Despatches (Nov ’09)
No 4251 Deadly Despatches (Dec ’09)
No 4259 Desperate Despatches (Jan 2010)

If you’ve missed any, e-mail subscriptions@dcthomson.co.uk with the ones you’re after. They’ll check if any stocks remain and let you know the cost of supplying them to you.

Thanks for the suggestion of a collection, we’ll keep it in mind.

Great. Thanks very much!

This issue is brilliant, much like David Niven’s “55 Days in Peking” film. Some scenes are almost like in the film.

I wonder if these newsmen will meet that Hun in some wars or incidents right all the way to the Great war but the next story would be the last one. so I think that Hun would be killed or put in shame at the end of the next story.

But you've forgotten that there are plenty of wars to cover for them between the Somalia incident and the start of the Great War like the Russo-Japanese war in 1905.

I am sure most readers would love to know more of the newsmen during these incidents between the turn of the century and the Great War.

I hope the editor would change his mind about the newsmen or is it too late for that?

John    Dec 16, 05:30 PM    #

I second that. More please!

The Editor    Dec 17, 10:05 AM    #

Does anyone else want more “Headline Heroes”? I’m sure Norman Adams could be persuaded to dust off Ferret’s cuttings book once more…

Jim    Dec 22, 08:02 AM    #

I do…

Norman Adams    Dec 22, 11:19 AM    #

Thanks David and John for your comments. It’s good to get positive feedback.

The long-running series has covered more than twenty wars and rebellions from Canada to Asia since the first story, “Read All About It!” That one saw Charles at the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War before he covered the Franco-Prussian War with his great rivals Harry and Ferret.

Dandy Digby first entered the scene as the Trident’s war artist in “Bad News Travels Fast!” and by “Hold the Front Page!” — a World War One thriller set in London — he was the newspaper’s chairman.

Since Ferret’s old cuttings book was rescued during the Blitz, the old rogue has enthralled us with further tales of derring-do. “Desperate Despatches” provides a cracking conclusion to their adventures.

Will the howling Hun get his just deserts?

David A    Dec 22, 08:23 PM    #

Nice to hear from you, Norman. I hope to see more stories with our newsmen.

These stories are probably the best non-traditional Commandos ever.

David Black    Jan 14, 04:42 PM    #

I hope so. “Desperate Despatches” now out in shops. When I got “Deadly Despatches” I read that the next issue about the newsmen (now released) would be the last to involve these reporters on the last but one page of the issue.

But I hope the editors and the staff would change their mind after my email and your reply?

My favourite set of stories. And there’s some interesting comments about the correct way to eat pie & mash in the ComicsUK Forum. For
the record, I don’t eat it myself!

Commando CO    Jan 14, 09:43 PM    #

I’m not sure but I think I scent a pie and mash smell coming from somewhere in the office. I wonder if the spirit of Ferret McGlone has taken up residence in the scripts cupboard again. I must ask if Norman Adams has detected the same aroma on his word processor.

Commando CO    Jan 15, 10:21 AM    #

Having read the entries on Comics UK, it’s put me off the whole idea.

Fenton    Jan 15, 06:52 PM    #

I’ve enjoyed this set. Interesting to read stories set in some of the more obscure campaigns & conflicts of the last 100+ years.
How about the cunning Prussians stealing plans for British submarines in the early years of the 20’th century ? … just a thought.

Ninian Reid    Feb 01, 12:30 PM    #

Norman Adams is the maestro when it comes to wartime story-telling. His words ricochet off the keyboard.

Ninian Reid    Jun 16, 10:19 AM    #

Delighted to see Commando authors (I use the word advisedly) such as Norman Adams receive their long-deserved bylines. It’s time to celebrate an end to their unwelcome, unfair and unnecessary anonymity.

Commando CO    Jun 16, 12:54 PM    #

That’s what we thought when we introduced the credits a few years back, Ninian. Glad you appreciate it.

Ninian Reid    Jun 16, 05:23 PM    #

By golly, Keith Page and John Ridgway are at the very top of their illustrative game; some masterful art work on display at a WH Smith near you.
