Diary Of WW2 — Day 183

Mar 01, 12:10 PM

Friday 1st March 1940

Soviet forces fight their way to within 6 km of the centre of Viipuri and dog fights take place over the city. Soviet peace proposals offered to Finland are withdrawn.

The final directive for the German invasion of Norway and Denmark is secretly issued in Berlin.

British women are urged to wear lighter-coloured clothes in order to save darker dyes for forces uniforms. According to BBC research, almost two-thirds of the British adult population tunes in to Lord Haw-Haw’s propaganda broadcasts from Hamburg and one person in six is a regular listener. Of the 16 million who hear the BBC nine o’clock news every night around 6 million switch straight over to Lord Haw-Haw afterwards.

Whether they believe his propaganda is another question.
