Diary Of WW2 — Day 194
Mar 12, 12:00 PM
Tuesday 12th March 1940
As the Finnish negotiators in Moscow await final approval from Helsinki, of the armistice terms offered by the Soviets, the French prime minister, Daladier, informs the Chamber of Deputies that an Anglo-French expeditionary force is ready to embark for Finland the moment the Finns appeal for assistance. That appeal seems unlikely to come now.
The British Home Fleet returns to Scapa Flow in Orkney from Rosyth and Loch Ewe after a substantial improvement of the anti-aircraft and anti-submarine defences at the base. The original defences were penetrated by Gunther Prien’s U-Boat in 1939, resulting in the loss of the Battleship Royal Oak.
