Commando Poll: When did you find Commando?
May 28, 10:05 AM
Thanks to everyone who responded to last month’s poll about the sort of stories you’d like to see in Commando. We’re putting all the results together, and we’ll let you know the Editor’s thoughts when we decipher his fiendishly complex cipher (aka “his handwriting”).
The poll is now closed, but you can still discuss Commando in the comments and we’ll make sure the Editor takes note!
Remember, you can use our comments function to give us more details, eg, if you’re a long-time reader, how do the current issues compare to the ones from when you first started reading the magazine or, if you’re a new reader, what do you think of the classic reprints?
i started reading commando in the 90s wen i was 9 or 10(im now 22) and i love em even the reprints are still great stories aswell as the new ones. Iv even got one of my friends reading them now!!!! keep up the good work
Hi Commando, This is my favorite comicbok series.. However, I can’t find this comic on sale. I am in Canada and i have bought the following in stores: True Brit and The Dirty dozen. Can you tell me where to find them, or make them available in Canada?
Thanks.
I can rarely find them in Britain! Best to subscribe which means you’ll never misss an issue.
I used to read Commando Comics in my boyhood, in the 70s, and transform them into games with my toy soldiers, guns, planes and tanks! I stopped buying them when I couldn’t find them in the shops anymore. I still kept my collection stored away during my youth and adulthood!
Now at 42, I am the proud owner of the COMPLETE COLLECTION – from Issue Number 1 to the latest issue! I bought the missing issues over the Internet. I also have the 2 Commando Annuals and the books just issued lately. With a regular subsciption, I ensure that I will NEVER miss a single issue again – AND I live in Malta, not the UK!
For the comics try: http://www.commandocomics.co.uk/
I used to read them as a kid in the 70’s then forgot about them until issue 4000 appeared in my local shop. I bought an issue for old times sake, then promptly went back and bought the rest. Now, about 100 odd issues later, I’m still buying them.
I read them – and it’s contemporaries like Warlord, Victor, etc – as a kid in the 80s. A time when world war was a not so distant memory and there was a distinct possibility of a third outing.
Forgot all about them until earlier in this year I fancied getting a print of a Commando cover for my office wall and stumbled across this site – genuinely genuinely surprised to find the mag still in print, and the wife treated me to a subscription for my 32nd birthday!
It’s utterly brilliant that in this modern liberalised PC non-denominational era something as tub-thumpingly ‘Old England’ as Commando can be in print!
Great work from the Commando team, keep it up, and, in words of one keen drinking Imperialist;
“Never Surrender!”
When I was 7 I’m now 20 and still reading them.I always had an Interest in warfare and as a result of reading them I’m now studying History in College.
I started to read Commando magazines in the 1960’s along with the Fleetwood Library War/Battle/Air Ace mags. My collection of Commando magazines now is over 2000 strong and still growing. I normally am able to pick up ‘Commando’ up at my local W.H.Smith although I have picked up quite a few on e-bay. I think that the book collections are good because although I may have read some of them there are still plenty that I have not. The only problem I have found is trying to get them as I have only seen them in the ‘Past Times’ shop.
I’m with Duncan hamilton on this one. Commandos are a ripping yarn and describe male virtues such as comradeship and heroism that are sneered at in this feminised Britain. I read mine with pride and my kids adore them. Considering the rubbish that they are fed on TV and in print, I can see why.
I’m a 20 year old female and I still enjoy Commando Comics.
I stumbled across a few of my dad’s Commando Comics when I was younger and have loved reading them ever since, even through I get surpized looks when people ask if I’m buying them for a brother and then I reply that I buy them for myself.
i’ve been only reading them for the past 3 years (im 13) and ever since loving them. I also managed my to get my friend interested reading them to.I’ve only bought a few of the big annuals and a few singular comics which can be hard to find in Australia! But it’s nice to read them every now and again.
my dad bought me ruddock’s rules, and phantom panhrs for my 8th birthday, saying that i will read them for the rst of my life and never get bored of them. he was right and i now have every one between about 3900 and 4100 plus a few extra my uncles used to read.
Just to prove that I do read all your comments, here’s my Commando experience. My dad first bought them for me back in the 60s — The Four Scars was one of the earliest. In the 70s I was still reading them. In the 80s I sub-edited my first one, Traitor Planes. After a posting elsewhere I came back to Commando in the 90s and even wrote a complete story — better not tell you which one in case you don’t like it… Then in the 00s I was given the chance to edit the series. You can’t get a better job than that. Like Eugenio, I’ve got a complete collection, the only trouble is they don’t belong to me, they go with the office. Keep buying them, guys, we don’t want to stop making them.
I started reading these in the 60’s when I was about 8. Eventually I had a collection of around 200 issues which I subsequently sold. I went to New Zealand this year and bought 4 old issues from a comic shop in Christchurch. I’m 52 now and the years just rolled away when I realised that commando is still a cracking read. When I got back to the UK I went on ebay buying these like crazy. I now have over 200 and I’m buying the new issues as well – I’m as hooked now as I ever was !! I have been very interested in WW2 all my life and I realise that a lot of that interest has originated from reading commando ( and the Victor ) as a child. Long may it continue.
hmm well i went into a shop on holiday and saw these books and got 2 and then i went into this place again and came out with loads and now collect then at home from my local news agent started in about 2003
My first encounter with Commando was finding this huge box under my brother’s bed. Not what you think! So I was beginning to enjoy reading as a kid and enjoyed the artwork. The first Commando that I bought was “Avalanche!” and up until 1990, I had managed to amass 1800 out of 2300 and was happily picking them up. However, my new job left me with little space and so my collections were side-lined. When I then lost even more storage space in the late 90’s, I had to choose which collection I had to let go of and in the coin toss between Tooth and Commando, Commando lost. (After seeing how easy it is to get Tooth on Ebay, I wished that I ad chosen otherwise!) It hurt to let go of them. But picked up another 2 in a certain air terminal near Oxford last month and I was chuffed to see they are still as good as ever. As a result, I am changing my DD from the Megazine to Commando.
Hey guys, just got round to checking out your site,I’m a bit technophobic.Like some others my brother gave me about 400 Commandos when I was 10.I collected like mad and had all but 18 issues between 300 and 1500.I ended up with about 2000 but in a fit of insanity sold them all.My pride and joy was number 91 in perfect condition. The Carlton books rekindled my interest.I don’t agree at all that The Dirty Dozen are the 12 best ever! The Rumble in the Jungle collection is more like it,though I would have included 2 of my all time faves,Dixon in Danger and Tail End Charlie. I guess Tail End Charlie is too politically incorrect for this day and age.Anyway,I’m back collecting.Keep ‘em coming!!
I’m 22 now, but my dad bought me my first one when I was about 8 or so, and thanks to second hand bookshops and a newsagent that actually sold them, I managed to start a bit of a collection. I found them stashed away a couple of years ago and I’ve got back into collecting them, and was happily surprised not only to find that Command was still being printed, but that the newsagent still sold them (Pretty rare here in Australia).
My first was 1068 “Frame Up”, which my parents bought me for a long train ride, to shut me up! I collected them until I was 16 then sold them all. I just started again, THIS WEEK! I’ve already bought the latest ones, and 25 off ebay, including “Frame Up”. Looks like I’ve come back to the fold.
I stumbled across the magazine again when I was in my local WHSmiths in Bridgwater, Somerset. I first started reading Commando when I was 7! (Am now 39!) Brings back so many memories. I echo the views of others on the site in that in a e-world, its great to still be able to thumb through some great stories. Keep up the good work. Could someone bring back Victor and Warlord?! Pretty please! They brought back Battle!!
I first read them in my youth {the ’70’s} then would dip in & out from time to time when I came across them in newsagents. I Eventually joined the R.N & used to take as many copies as I could find to keep me amused on a long tour of duty !. Still enjoy them today as they depict an England { or perhaps that should be Britain ?} that has more or less sadly vanished.
More Submarine stories please !!!
I’m 13 and first came across a Commando in a campsite shop when I was 8 or 9 somewhere in england. Sadly when I got home (Cardiff) I couldn’t find any in the local newsagents. But eventually I came across a market stall which sold them second-hand and have been an avid reader ever since. Keep up the good work Commando!!
Glad you’re enjoying the stories, Matt. Commando should be available in all good newsagents in the UK. WH Smith stock us all over the place. Any newsagent can order copies through their normal wholesaler. If the newsagent has the Beano on the shelves, he can definitely get Commando.
I'm 16 now and my first three issues were three years ago on holiday in Edinburgh and I have got to say they are excellent and gripping to read. I took a year out and up to a couple of weeks ago I realised I missed getting them, so I bought the latest issues and have done a whole years subscription with delight. Keep Commando comics coming fast.
I’ve been reading Commando since my dad gave me my first copy back in the 60’s. I think I was about 10 at the time and I thought that they were great. I started collecting them seriously in 1976 just after I joined the RAF Regiment. The troops used to have them in the barrack blocks and pass them around each other as a good read. When they had finished with them I got them to give them all to me just incase someone else wanted a read. Little did they know that I was saving them for me. We used to call them TP’s (Training Pamphlets) and got some good ideas from them. Through the years I’ve collected quite a lot and I’ve still got all those from my early Regt years. I’ve taken them all over the world with me when I was posted etc. I’m still in the RAF Regiment and still collect them however, you don’t see the troops reading them so much anymore. Shame, coz I’m sure that they would enjoy them. Ever thought of sending some out to the troops in Afghanistan, I’m sure they’d appreciate it. I’ve got quite a collection of Commando memorabilia and hope to continue until one day I have to pass them on. Keep them coming, they’re excellent.
Been reading this great mag since about 6 years old (now 50) recently lost my source of supply. Am now going to subsribe for the next twelve months. Please keep them coming
Thanks for the compliments, fellahs, we do our best. There are already loads of Commandos floating about Afghanistan, many of them courtesy of No 6 Force Protection Wing (RAF Regiment) and others with 2 Rifles. We’ve got subscribers in the Forces too, but if any more want to sign up they can do so at UK rates even if they are detached overseas.
I'm 9 and I have 2000 issues. I started reading Commando when I was 7.
I’ve been reading on and off since I was a kid in the 70s. In those days I much preferred the weekly war comics like Battle and Warlord but I would pick up a Commando from time to time. These days I never miss an issue and get them from my local W.H.Smiths.
I am 13 and I just began reading Commando about a month or so ago thanks to my friend. I had bought one Commando about a year ago, and got a new one with my friend during the D-Day specials. I then kind of drifted away only to come back when Oil Rig Raiders was out (Oil Rig Raiders being my fave).
Now I buy as many as I can each time, considering it’s €1.92 per comic, that’s not too easy, but I try!
I think I might have had some Commandos when I was very young, but I don’t remember that well. I remember going on holiday in around 1997, when I would have been about 13 or 14, and buying some in a shop in Weymouth. I still remember three of them vividly – “Division of the Dead”, “The Line-Shooter” and “Topper Squadron”. I must have read those three hundreds of times.
I am just a few months younger than Commando itself. I read sporadically over the years, and the recent Tainted Archive article inspired me to seek them out. Due to lack of availability in nearby shops I have just taken out a sub. (A subscription I mean – I haven’t blown up a U-Boat!)
Thanks for taking out the sub(!), Roy. Every one counts. I hope we keep you happy enough to extend it.
Wow! What a blast from the past! Was back in the UK on business last week after 20 years away, popped into the local bookshop and there was the ‘Battle of Britain Scramble’ 10 edition paperback (which I bought). On return to Jhb, I sat in my store room for 6 hours going through my 200 odd old comics from the 70s. Amazed it’s still going, but very very glad!
As a number of members here have testified, I became aware of Commando comics about 7 years ago, but alas I never collected them until about 2 years ago (waste of good money, going by the family!) Thank god I don’t listen to them LOL!!!!.
I get great pleasure from them.
I have been burnt a few times, as I asume others have as well. I buy in good faith, but I seem to get the UN moral ones in Australia who send you their ones with missing pages GOD I HATE THAT !!!!
Anyway, I have just found this site, and don’t want to be banned off it now for being a whinger LOL.
Thanks for listening to an old codger in Auzzie who likes to live the HEROIC Lives of our brave men who fought so we could sit in our back patio’s and enjoy a good read !!!!!!!!!!
Cheers guy’s.
Gary
I started reading commando in the 70’s growing up as a kid in the Caribbean. I was known in my village for my huge collection that was catalogued as well, sadly I lost them to the deadly Hurricane David. My western collection was destroyed as well. Now I finally stumbled on this while searching. I will subscribe.
