When a fortune-teller warns a soldier of impending death, he’s likely to say, “Well there is a war on!” Followed by, “Can I have my money back?” The deadly prophecy given to Private Bernie Sutton in a seaside booth in France in 1940, though, seemed somehow different, somehow very real. Bernie knew he was going to die — but he never guessed how often.
